Prof. Annamari Ranki, MD, PhD, Chairman of the Department, will be responsible for the AD and PSO patient studies in Helsinki, coordinating these with A. Lauerma (Partner 1). Dermatologist M.M. and lab technician K.K. will perform patient studies.
The Department of Dermatology and Allergic Diseases, University of Helsinki (UH), is the leading dermatological clinic in Finland, located in the Skin and Allergy Hospital of Helsinki University Central Hospital. The clinic has ca. 100 000 out-patient visits per year, two in-patient wards (34 beds) and the largest national skin cancer/lymphoma unit with ca. 2 000 biopsies taken annually and with two dermatopathologists (HUSLAB). The academic research staff of the department comprises of the department head (Pr. Ranki), two part-time professors, one assistant professor, one full-time senior researcher, 10 senior staff members (specialists with PhD degree/docent), 9 residents and 10 PhD students. The department has modern, fully equipped research facilities both in the hospital building and in the Biomedicum Helsinki. Several of the PhD students are funded through the national Graduate Schools and the research groups have external funding from e.g. the Academy of Finland, National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes) and EU FP6. International research exchange is very active.

Main tasks of University of Helsinki
WP7 Coordination, Vice-Coordinator of MAARS project and member of Coordination Office at FIOH (A.Lauerma). UH is Responsible for Deliverable 2, Collection of Swab Samples. WP1 Participant and Vice-Chair (A. Lauerma). Prof . Annamari Ranki and her research group has a track record in research on human immunology, atopic dermatitis, allergology and psoriasis. The group recently discovered and patented the first CTCLassociated gene translocation/deletion, which is now being developed for a new molecular biologic diagnostic test. Prof. Ranki is President of European Dermatology Forum. Prof. Ranki has over 200 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 6 patents/patent applications, and has been leader of largest dermatology department in Finland since 1995.

Assoc. prof. Antti Lauerma is Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at University of Helsinki and Consulting Dermatologist at Skin and Allergy Hospital, Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH). He is an internationally recognized scientist, whose research has for the last 25 years concentrated on skin allergy and development of skin testing. He has wide international collaborations on both research and organizations. He has over 80 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. He is currently Vice-President of Finnish Dermatological Society. He is the Vice-coordinator of the MAARS project. He was the Coordinator in the successful EU project CHEMOKINE-ATOPY during 2002-2005.
